A Few of My New(ish) Food Faves

Stonewall Kitchen Watermelon Mojito Mixer: I found this at a local family owned grocery store that happens to have a pretty cool wine and beer section. Unlike most sugary mixers, this one is all natural and only 35 calories per ounce. This can also be mixed with club soda for a nice virgin refreshment....but I prefer vodka:) Oikos Greek Nonfat Yogurt: I am well aware that Greek yogurt has been trending for years, but this is still a staple in my house even though I never real

Nothing Says Love Like A Heart Healthy Brunch

For the record, I also think that shoes, chocolate, vacations and flowers are a nice way to say, “I love you", but if you are looking for a nice DIY approach, try one of the following mindfully decadent brunch options. Banana split: A twist on the traditional creamery favorite. Cut the banana in half long ways and top with light yogurt, nuts, fruit salsa and slivers of dark chocolate for an antioxidant kick. Turkey bacon.....but in a heart. Because every brunch needs bacon..

Panko Crusted Chicken Stuffed with Ricotta, Spinach, Tomatoes, and Basil

I was trolling Pinterest recently looking for some DASH diet recipes and gracefully stumbled upon a few winners. The DASH diet (dietary approaches to stop hypertension) seems to be making a comeback in a BIG way....like wide leg pants and crop tops....and was voted one of the top diets of the year. I had completely forgotten about this widely successful diet which first gained popularity in the 90's (don't quote me on the decade). Anyways, it lacks any kind of quirky gimmic (

The Lies Nutritionist Are Telling You

Lies may sound a little harsh.....more like fibs. Sitll bad, huh? First, I would like to clarify that Registered Dietitians/Nutritionists are the leading experts in all things food and nutrition, and work very hard, long after graduation to stay up to date on current studies and trends. I just think we need to rethink some of the stale tips and "isms" that we share with our clients and patients on a daily basis. It can be hard to sum up the way someone should eat vs how they

    Flour-less, All Natural,Black Bean Brownies!

I have heard about black bean brownies for some time, but have been way to skeptical to try it out for myself....until my chocolate cravings got OOC (out of control). After all, my Mexico vacation.... followed by my trip to Napa.... is upon us, so I would rather make mindful food choices now, than later. Right!? A true Sophie's choice, eh? I found a few potential starter recipes on Pinterest. I say “Starter”, because I always end up tweaking things to fit my health standards.

The 2015 Diet Trends to Try....and Which to Skip

It's here! New year resolution time! This is like the super bowl for us type-A, perfectionist Dietitian type. I seriously have my game face on, and have done the leg work for you on which diet trends are worth trying....and which ones will be nothing more than entertaining to hear about from your hangry girlfriends over a nice, lame cup of hot lemon water. 1) Cauliflower: Try It! I have read on numerous sites that cauliflower is the "Food of 2015". Good news, not only becaus

These Are a Few of My Favorite Things

I love the holidays and tend to go a weeeee bit overboard with the shopping.....food, gifts, stocking stuffers.....doesn't matter. As a self-proclaimed professional shopper, I really put some thought into giving the perfect gift because, NEWS FLASH, no one really wants that cheesy rayon mix sweater from Express. As a gift to you, I will share my list for the top gifts, or gifts to give yourself, for a happy and healthy holiday season. French Press: This love affair happened

    Easy DIY Cereal Bars

While it is ultra convenient to grab a box of granola bars off the grocery store shelf, I can't help but get super skived out by the ingredient list. If you are looking for a healthier snack or breakfast option for you and your family, try making your own bars. I usually start with my own base of quick oats, mix in a few tablespoons of flax seed (for some heart healthy omegas and fiber), toss in some dried fruit, a squeeze of honey or agave and a dash of brown sugar. I have s

What This Dietitan Would Like You To Stop Eating

I know, I know! Everything in moderation is ok....but it should really be moderation in moderation. I really do believe that there is a time and place for everything, but I can't help but turn my nose up at the following foods: Soft Pretzels: It may be a Philly thing, but these sodium laden treats can be found in every break room from Allentown to AC. With a whopping 70 grams of carbohydrates, this snack option is equivalent to eating over 4 slices of bread!!! I normally wo
